Motivation Monday: MLK Jr Edition

In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, here are some of my favorite quotes of his that will get you motivated and inspired to take on the day and create greatness in your life.

“Faith is taking the first step when you cannot see the whole staircase.”

Oftentimes, we feel the need to change but are afraid of the unknown. This is a natural feeling and it can be tough to overcome. Have faith in yourself and know that the best things in life come when you step outside of your comfort zone and challenge yourself. Believe in yourself and know that you can be the change that you want to see in the world.

“If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.”

Keep moving forward. It doesn’t matter how fast or slow you are moving forward, all that matters is that you are trying. This is one of my favorite quotes for runners. One of my favorite things about running is that it is a sport where the only competition is yourself. Everyone is on their own journey and runs at their own speed. It doesn’t matter if you run a 15 minute mile and your friend runs a 6 minute mile. Don’t get down on yourself for being slower. At the end of the day you are ending up at the same spot. It is not a race against others. You are challenging yourself and you are moving forward. Be proud.

“Everybody can be great … because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.”

What is your why? Staying motivated through training, and life in general, can be difficult. When you find yourself struggling to find motivation, think of why you started and what your want to become. Believe in yourself to know that things will get better. When you know your motivating factors, follow through with them and never give up. You will reach your goals and will be great.

“We must live together as brothers or perish together as fools.”

We are all in this together. Life can be overwhelming at times and there is nothing more comforting than knowing that you have friends to help lift you up. Make sure that you are also present for those who need help. Helping others and giving back to those people who are in need is one of the most important things we can do in life.

“Every man must decide whether he will walk in the light of creative altruism or in the darkness of destructive selfishness.”

We are the creators of our own happiness. Being happy or being down on ourselves is a choice. Nothing positive will ever come from negative thoughts. It is totally normal and okay to feel sad and depressed, but know that only you can control your happiness. Believe in yourself and be positive. Your positive attitude and happiness is infectious and can help motivate others to believe in themselves. Once you lift yourself up, you will be able to lift up others.

“If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way”

This quote is great for anyone who is going through a fitness journey and just feels overwhelmed with the larger goal their are trying to hit. It is easy to get discouraged when you are not seeing immediate changes. Believe that your goals will come through hard work and perseverance. Break up the large fitness goal into smaller, quickly attainable goals. Making these small stepping stones in the path to your goal will allow you to see continuous success.

“There is no gain without struggle.”

Simple and to the point. And it is 100% true. Life will always have difficult moments. Do not be afraid of them. Embrace the challenges, for they will make you stronger. Nothing worth having comes easy. You will overcome the challenges and become great. If you ever feel like the challenges are too much, never be afraid to ask for help. Asking for help does not mean you are weak. It means you realize that what you want is worth fighting for. Also, when you have overcome your struggles and life is going well, reach out to others and lift them up. Helping others out is one of the best things we can do to improve the world. We are all in this together and, as a team, we can overcome any challenge.

These are just a few of my favorite motivation quotes from MLK Jr. I would highly recommend checking out a few of his speeches to get you motivated and inspired to help yourself and others grow. We’ve all heard the “I have a Dream” speech and it is always a good listen, but I would also recommend reading his “Beyond Vietnam” speech. It truly gets into how we are all human and why we need to look out for one another.
